AI Literacy: A Must-Have for Marketers and Communicators

Why AI literacy is now table stakes for marketing and communications teams, with practical resources to grasp the language, risks and data practices behind responsible AI.

By Heather RimDecember 18, 2024

Safeguarding the organization has become a crucial responsibility for today’s marketing and communications teams – and AI literacy is now table stakes for anyone in our profession. Key areas that are especially critical to focus on include:

  • 01Ensuring you have a firm grasp of the language — AI vs. ML, hallucination, grounding, over-reliance, data provenance, and more.
  • 02Knowing how to identify risks and threats specific to AI and best practices for using tools safely and securely.
  • 03Understanding how AI systems use data so you can spot AI bias and know how to report and resolve it.

So, if you’re looking to up your AI game, I’m happy to share two great resources.

First, check out Optiv’s free online AI Literacy and Awareness training. Here you’ll find a great overview of the AI landscape, AI terms and an in-depth exploration of risks, bias, emerging trends and more.

I’m also happy to share a link to the latest edition of the 2025 Relevance Report: AI Activated.

One of the most incredible communities that I am fortunate to be a part of is the USC Center for Public Relations Board of Advisors. Each year the Center produces the Relevance Report, and I’m sure it will come as no surprise that our just-released report is focused on the activation of AI.

As we all know, AI is rapidly transforming our daily work, and this year’s report features over 40 essays about what it means for our profession, the media and beyond. In my essay, AI Literacy in the Digital Age, I talk about the importance of recognizing how AI can be used maliciously, whether in cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns or more, and how we can stay ahead of these risks to help protect our organizations from brand and reputational damage.
